Apple's next generation iPhone could feature an upgraded ultra-wide camera, according to a new report from TFI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Chinese supplier Sunny Optical has reportedly passed Apple's verification process for 5P (five-element) iPad lenses. The company is said to have learned a lot from the process, making the probability of it shipping a 7P (seven-element) Wide Angle lens for the iPhone 13 significantly higher.

Kuo expects Sunny Optical to start shipping iPad 5P lenses in the middle of this quarter, initially supplying 15% of Apple's total order. This will put pressure on Largan who apparently has been fueling a price war due to its significant technological advantages over other lens suppliers. The increased competition and lens verification improvements could encourage Apple to go ahead with an upgrade to the iPhone's Ultra Wide camera.

Previously, Kuo had predicted that the Ultra Wide cameras on the two high-end iPhone 13 models will get a f/1.8, 6P lens with autofocus. Currently, all iPhone 12 models have a f/2.4, 5P Ultra Wide camera lens with fixed focus.
