TSMC is set to start production of Apple's custom ARM-based processors for Macs in the fourth quarter of this year, reports DigiTimes.

Apple is gearing up for the launch of its new-generation MacBook and iPad Pro series powered by its own Arm-based processors, which will be fabricated using TSMC's 5nm process technology. TSMC is expected to start making Apple Silicon in fourth-quarter 2020. Apple's growing adopting of SiP technology is setting a trend that many in the semiconductor sector are keen to follow. And leading backend services providers expect sales from their SiP businesses to climb about 30% in 2020.

Monthly output of 5nm wafers for the new Apple Silicon processors is estimated at 5000-6000 wafers.

According to the China Times, Apple will launch a new 12-inch MacBook with a custom A14X processor this year. The notebook is said to weigh less than 1kg and offer 15-20 hours of battery life. Apple is rumored to be using the same A14X processor in a new iPad Pro.
