iPhone 12 Pro Max to Support Millimeter-Wave 5G But Only in Three Countries [Report]

Apple's next generation iPhone 12 Pro Max will reportedly be the only model to support millimeter-wave 5G and only in three countries, according to Fast Company.

Apple is expected to unveil four new iPhone 12 models this year. All models will support Sub-6 GHz 5G service but a source says just the iPhone 12 Pro Max will get millimeter-wave 5G.

The source says only the largest phone in the line has room inside for the special antenna design required for millimeter wave and larger battery needed to accommodate millimeter wave’s significant power draw. Also, only the U.S., Korea, and Japan versions of the Pro Max will support millimeter-wave 5G.

Millimeter-wave travels between 24 GHz and 39GHz delivering speeds up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps); however, the signal doesn't penetrate as well as Sub-6 GHz signals and is more expensive to deploy.

Notably, this Fast Company report follows an earlier one from DigiTimes which claimed that this year's iPhones will support both technologies but next year's would support either mmWave or Sub-6Hz.

Apple is expected to unveil its next generation iPhones at an event in late October. Please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for updates.
