New 27-inch iMac Has Soldered SSD Storage

Apple's new 27-inch iMac now uses soldered, non upgradeable, SSD storage, according to an iFun.de report. The site found internal technical documentation confirming the change.

According to internally published technical information, the SSDs integrated by Apple are not plugged in and therefore interchangeable memory modules, as was previously the case with the Fusion Drive. Instead, individual memory chips are soldered onto the main board, similar to how Apple has been doing this for MacBooks for several years. As a consequence, the basic memory configuration is fixed and cannot be changed or upgraded afterwards.

This is disappointing news; however, it's still unclear if storage expansion using a second drive is possible. We should know more when the desktop begins arriving to customers.

Fortunately, the RAM on the new 27-inch iMac is still user upgradeable. You can save over $2000 by doing this. More details here.

The new iMac can be pre-ordered starting at $1799.
