Save Thousands On a RAM Upgrade for the New 27-inch iMac

Apple unveiled a major update to the 27-inch iMac this week with some significant performance improvements; however, configuring this new model with more than 8GB of RAM may give you some serious sticker shock.

The new iMac has four slots for 2666MHz DDR4 memory and is configurable with up to 128GB of RAM. Apple's price to go from 8GB to 128GB is an outrageous $2600, over 4X the going rate.

Thankfully, the new iMac still allows users to upgrade the RAM themselves. You'll need to get PC4-21333, Unbuffered, Nonparity, 260-pin, 2666MHz DDR4 SDRAM modules. OWC sells these at huge price savings.

For example, the 128GB OWC kit is currently on sale for $599.99. This will literally save you $2000.01 over Apple's price.

There are also 32GB and 64GB kits available. We've listed them below.

OWC 128GB (4x32GB) 2666MHz DDR4 SDRAM - $599.99 ($2000.01 off Apple's price)
OWC 64GB (4x16GB) 2666MHz DDR4 SDRAM - $268.99 ($731.01 off Apple's price)
OWC 32GB (2x16GB) 2666MHz DDR4 SDRAM - $134.99 ($465.01 off Apple's price)

Notably, Samsung sells a single 32GB DDR4 2666MHz stick for $125.14. Getting four of these would give you 128GB of RAM for $500, saving you about $2100 off Apple's price.

You can find instructions on how to replace the RAM in your iMac here. It does NOT involve disassembly, so anyone should be able to do it.

I went ahead and ordered one tricked out iMac from Apple, but after checking Experion’s prices, cancelled the order (NOT easy to do) and not only saved a cool thousand (32gb memory), but upgraded several other options to boot. While Experion.com is slow (they order from Apple, before shipping to you), you’ll save on nearly every single option, including Apple Care!

Good call cancelling, you’re better off building the memory yourself and saving a ton of cash. Cheers mate!
