Apple is bringing onboard new camera lens suppliers that could provide periscope lenses for the 2022 iPhone, according to a new report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
"We predict that Semco, the best Korean lens supplier, and Sunny Optical, the best Chinese lens supplier, will enter the Apple lens supply chain in 2H20 and 2021, respectively."
These new suppliers could negatively affect the revenue of Genius Electronic Optical which currently provides lenses for iPhone.
Despite a previous report that said Apple was working on periscope lens design plans with GEO, Kuo says that Semco will provide a large percentage of new periscope telephoto lenses for the 2022 iPhone.
A periscope style lens would allow Apple to increase the optical zoom capabilities of iPhone without a lens that extends out of the camera. Huawei's P30 Pro uses a periscope lens and is able to offer true 5X optical zoom with true 10X optical zoom expected in the future.
