Apple is Working on Premium and Fitness-Focused Over-Ear Headphones With Interchangeable Parts [Report]

Apple is working on two models of new over-ear headphones with parts that can be swapped in and out, according to a new report from Bloomberg. One variation is a premium version with leather-like fabrics and the other is a fitness-focused model that uses lighter, breathable materials with small perforations.

Prototypes of the headphones have a retro look with oval-shaped ear cups that swivel and a headband connected by thin, metal arms. The arms stem from the top of the ear cups rather than the sides, the people added. They asked not to be identified discussing products that haven’t been announced.

The ear pads and headband padding are attached to the frame magnetically so they can be easily replaced by users. This would also let owners customize their headphones and convert between premium and fitness use.

The new headphones will likely use similar pairing and noise-cancellation technology as Apple's popular AirPods Pro. They will utilize Siri for voice control and are said to have a limited set of integrated touch controls.

Apple will be competing with popular noise cancellation headphones such as the Bose Noise Cancelling Wireless Bluetooth Headphones 700 and Sony Noise Cancelling Headphones WH1000XM3. Those retail for around $350.

Sources say Apple' headphones have in development for at least two years; however, their launch has been pushed back at least twice. They were set to launch this year but the coronavirus outbreak has made Apple's release schedule uncertain. Evidence of the headphones in a leaked iOS 14 build gives us hope that they could arrive before the holidays.
