TSMC is on track to ramp 5nm chip production in the second quarter of 2020, reports DigiTimes.

TSMC is on track to move 5nm process technology to volume production in second-quarter 2020 as scheduled, and continues to see the process capacity fully booked despite recent speculation claiming that the foundry has been requested by Apple to defer production of its next-generation A-series chips, according to industry sources.

The outlook for TSMC's new manufacturing process remains good with robust orders coming from the server sector as the coronavirus pandemic increases demand for those products.

The handset industry has been hit much harder by COVID-19. The outbreak has hurt both supply and demand for smartphones. Apple will purportedly use a new A14 processor built on TSMC's 5nm process for the iPhone 5G. However, even if the company is able to launch the device this fall, there are concerns surrounding demand given the economic shutdown in the United States and other countries around the world.
