Apple has paid VirnetX over $454 million after failing to prove it did not violate patents owned by the company.

VirnetX announced the receipt of funds from Apple today:

VirnetX Holding Corporation, an Internet security software and technology company, announced today that it has received payment of $454,033,859.87, representing the previously announced judgment with interest in the VirnetX Inc. v. Apple case, 6:10-cv-00417 ("Apple I").

VirnetX sued Apple back in 2010 for infringing four patents for secure networks, known as VPNs, and secure communication links. This technology is used in Apple's FaceTime and VPN on Demand features.

After a decade long legal fight the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Apple's appeal last month, leaving the company without further recourse. This is just one of the cases VirnetX launched against Apple. There is still another pertaining to newer devices that has yet to be finalized.
