Apple Tweaks MacBook Pro Keyboard With 'New Materials', Expands Repair Program

Apple says the keyboard in today's updated 2019 MacBook Pro features 'new materials' that will reduce the type of issues experienced with previous generations of the butterfly keyboard.

The company disclosed the update to The Verge earlier today.

On a call this morning, the company also declined to actually characterize what the new material is other than to say it “substantially reduces” the issue of double or missed key presses. The new design still counts as “third generation,” aka the same keyboard that shipped on the new MacBook Air.

Notably, some customers that are experiencing issues with their keyboard may have their keyboards replaced with the improved one. This only applies to 2018 models of the MacBook Pro and the new MacBook Air

Additionally, the Apple Keyboard Service Program has been expanded to included all MacBooks with the butterfly mechanism, including the 2019 MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, the program still only covers users for four years.

It's likely that a teardown will reveal more information about how exactly Apple tweaked the keyboard. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.
