Apple is planning to launch a third generation of its popular AirPods by the end of the year, according to DigiTimes.

The new wireless earphones will purportedly incorporate a noise cancellation function. Taiwan's Inventec is said to be the primary assembler with China's Luxshare Precision getting some orders as well.

The sources said that noise cancellation is not a new technology, but a technology hard to harness. On the one hand, semiconductor devices can hardly work without suffering electromagnetic disturbance, and on the other hand how the structural design of the noise forward feedback microphone can be done well to achieve harmonious operation with other devices is a great challenge for designers and assemblers.

Additionally, noise cancellation will consume more power so Apple may need to reduce power consumption elsewhere.

Apple is estimated to have sold 35 million AirPods in 2018 capturing 75% of global market share. That number is expected to rise to 50 million in 2019 helped by the launch of its second generation AirPods with 'Hey, Siri' support and wireless charging capabilities.
