Concept Imagines macOS With Split Views Instead of Windows [Video]

Check out this new macOS concept from designer Thomas Weinreich that imagines macOS ditching traditional windows in favor of a split screen interface similar to iPad.

With a better windows management the old desktop metaphor is no longer needed. No more floating windows that waste space and are cumbersome to arrange. Instead apps always use the full screen and macOS has fast, easy and flexible splitscreen-capabilities.

Like on iOS, Weinreich suggests that a screens-history bar could show all the last used apps, replacing Mission Control. Integrated into the SpringBoard it would be the new starting point for Mac. Users could pin apps in the screens-history and rearrange them.

Without the old desktop and with an intelligent power management and the screens-history there is no need to close or minimize an app. And no need for the traffic light buttons. Simply swipe between apps and swipe up to go to the springboard. Just like on the iPad.

Gestures could include a pinch with four fingers to snap an app to the left side of the screen or the opposite to bring it back to fullscreen. Pinching with four fingers then dragging an app would create a split screen.

The concept visualizes a direction that many pro users are fearful of. Updating macOS to be less capable and customizable and more like iOS.
