Apple has hired Soonho Ahn, Samsung SDI's former Senior VP of Next Generation Batteries and Materials Innovation, as its Global Head of Battery Developments.

Ahn started at Samsung SDI in April 2015 as Senior Vice President of Next Generation Batteries R&D. He was "in charge of new, improved anode and cathode materials, solid eletrolytes, new functional electrolyte additives, coated separator membranes, fast charge capability cell designs".

In December 2015, Ahn became Senior Vice President of Batteries Development where he was in charge of lithium ion cell and pack developments; as well as, cylindrical, prismatic, and polymer cells for power tools, electric vehicles, ebikes, smartphones, etc.

Bloomberg notes that Apple has used batteries from Samsung SDI to power its own products in the past. The hire suggests that Apple may be looking to develop its own battery technology for use in future devices.
