The first beta of iOS 12.1 seeded to developers today appears to support Face ID in landscape, likely for a new iPad Pro, according to developer Steve Troughton-Smith.
Face ID has support for landscape orientation (presumably for iPad only), and iOS 12.1 seems to care a lot more about whether an external display is connected (perhaps due to iPad USB-C rumors; it won't have the Lighting HDMI adapter as an intermediary for video-out)
Recent reports have suggested the upcoming iPad Pro redesign will feature smaller bezels, no Home button, Face ID, USB-C instead of Lightning, and a new 18W charger.
