LG to Supply Apple With 2-4 Million OLED Display Panels for New iPhones [Report]

LG will supply Apple with 2-4 million OLED displays for its next generation iPhones, reports the South China Morning Post. LG has been working hard to ramp up its OLED production capacity and capture some of Apple's orders for OLED display panels. Currently, Samsung is the sole supplier of OLED panels for the iPhone X.

If LG is able to supply some OLED panels to Apple, it would help the company in price negotiations with Samsung.

“Securing a second supplier for OLED screens is crucial for Apple as it will allow the company to reduce its reliance on Samsung, which is currently the sole supplier,” said Jerry Kang, a senior principal analyst at IHS Markit. “At the same time, it will help accelerate a broad adoption of OLED screens. More suppliers means more volume, and in turn, lower pricing.”

The OLED screens from LG will purportedly be used for one model of the new iPhones debuting this fall. LG wants to supply all of the screens for that model but it's unclear if it will be able to achieve that volume of production.

Apple is expected to unveil a new 5.8-inch OLED iPhone, a 6.1-inch LCD iPhone and a 6.5-inch OLED iPhone. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.
