Apple may use an MLCD+ display, a new type of display found in the LG G7 ThinQ, for its rumored 6.1-inch iPhone, industry sources tell BusinessKorea.
MLCD+ display technology offers a bright screen with less power consumption than regular LCD displays.
LG named the display of the G7 ThinQ “Super Bright Display.” Its color reproduction rate is 100% on the DCI-P3 basis which expresses delicate colors close to nature even on bright screens. At the same brightness, the G7 ThinQ consumes 30% less power compared to the previous G6 model loaded with an LCD display.
It's thought that Apple may be looking to use the MLCD+ display to save costs over OLED while still providing better display performance than the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
On an LCD display, pixels are typically made up of three subpixels (red, green, blue); however, the MLCD+ display adds an extra white pixel allowing more light to shine through. LG says the display can reach 1,000 nits of brightness.
Apple is expected to unveil three new iPhones this fall including a 5.8-inch OLED iPhone, a 6.1-inch LCD iPhone, and a 6.5-inch OLED iPhone. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.
