Apple Plans Larger 6.5-inch iPhone Codenamed 'D33' With 1242x2688 Resolution, iOS 12 Codenamed 'Peace' [Report]

Apple is planning to release three new iPhones later this year including a larger phablet codenamed D33, reports Bloomberg. At least some prototypes of the device feature a screen resolution of 1242x2688, according to a person familiar with its development.

With a screen close to 6.5 inches, Apple’s big new handset will be one of the largest mainstream smartphones on the market. While the body of the phone will be about the same size as the iPhone 8 Plus, the screen will be about an inch larger thanks to the edge-to-edge design used in the iPhone X.

Both the larger 6.5-inch device and a 5.8-inch update to the iPhone X, code-named D32, are expected to run off a new A12 processor. They'll have Face ID and stainless steel edges just like the current iPhone X. Apple is considering a gold color option; however, it abandoned that color last year due to production problems.


In some regions, Apple may offer a dual-SIM card option for the larger iPhone. This would let people use their phones on multiple carriers without having to switch cards. A final decision on whether to include the feature or wait for eSIM technology hasn't been made. Apple wants to offer eSIM capabilities but some carriers are resistant to the idea.

The three new phones will run an updated operating system, likely called iOS 12 and codenamed 'Peace', with upgraded augmented reality capabilities, deeper Siri integration, digital health monitoring and the ability to use Animojis in FaceTime.

Apple is also planning a lower-cost model with an edge-to-edge screen similar to the iPhone X, Face ID, aluminum edges, a glass back, and an LCD display. This should keep costs down, making the device more appealing to many customers.
