Apple is purportedly planning to release an LCD iPhone with a metal back next year, according to a new report from Nikkei. The company is also expected to release two OLED models.
"The 6.1-inch LCD model will likely sport a metal back [like older iPhone handsets] that will come in several colors," said the source, adding that the two OLED handsets will come in two sizes: one either 6.2 or 6.3 inches long, and the other 5.8 inches.
If Apple does use a metal back for the LCD model, Casetek, a subsidiary of Pegatron, could become a supplier. A source said that the company stood a good chance of winning orders as the design may be similar to that of the iPad which it's already supplying casing for. Another source claimed that Casetek has already been trying out new casings for the LCD.
It's believed that Apple may have reservations about producing just OLED iPhones as Samsung is the only manufacturer capable of supplying its needs. LG is estimated to be able to supply a mere 10 million panels next year.
