Qualcomm Files Lawsuit Seeking to Ban iPhone Sales and Manufacturing in China

Qualcomm has filed a lawsuit seeking to ban iPhone sales and manufacturing in China, reports Bloomberg.

The San Diego-based company aims to inflict pain on Apple in the world’s largest market for smartphones and cut off production in a country where most iPhones are made. The product provides almost two-thirds of Apple’s revenue. Qualcomm filed the suits in a Beijing intellectual property court claiming patent infringement and seeking injunctive relief, according to Christine Trimble, a company spokeswoman.

"Apple employs technologies invented by Qualcomm without paying for them," Trimble said.

Qualcomm new lawsuit comes after being slapped with a massive $773 million fine by the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission for antitrust violations. The company is also being investigated by the Korea Fair Trade Commission, the FTC, and the European Commission.

Back in January, Apple sued Qualcomm for allegedly withholding $1 billion in rebates because it complied with Korean regulators investigating Qualcomm. It has since expanded that lawsuit on the heels of a Supreme Court ruling last month, arguing that the license agreements that give Qualcomm a cut of every iPhone manufactured are invalid.

Qualcomm's suit in China is based on three non-standard essential patents that allegedly cover power management and touch-screen technology like Force Touch used in current iPhones. The inventions "are a few examples of the many Qualcomm technologies that Apple uses to improve its devices and increase its profits,” Trimble claims.

What are you talking about? Qualcomm is the largest cellphone chip manufacturer providing chips for half of apples products and many many andriod phones. They produce the main chip that phones use to connect to cell phone towers. If they disappeared the world would be in a ton of trouble. Intels chips cant compete with qualcomms.

Well good. Bring it back to the States. We could use the jobs and they don’t need more sweatshops.

Appl. HAS OVER 200 BILLION THEY SAY IN CASH. They most likely use these for lawyers fees. The use of 100's of patents is not big deal, they can use 200 billion to contest them, and put the companies out of business. This is joke. People who own patents should get payments and royalties for those patents. When you 200 billion you can leverage the money and put patents in legal jeopardy. ITS A JOKE

Too many patent infringement and I own this and I own that, you can use this but I made this so you can make that. Open source, drop the lawsuits, focus on product development and put your money to good use. All this bickering will not move technology forward. Technology is a race in all countries are running it. If we want to run this race and win this race so that technology can help better our world, we need to not sweat the small stuff. Big business needs to drop the ego and work together. That's my opinion.

Progressive kumbaya singer much? You don't realize of course that it's the capitalism (and cut-throat is a part and parcel of it) that is singlehandedly responsible for all the technology "in the hands of the people" that betters our world, do you?

I do, each day. Do you volunteer, have you built homes for homeless, do you spend time in children's hospitals? I am a tech and programmer and it's sad to see that the world has individuals like yourself who still can't see a benefit when it comes to making this world a better place through open source communication in technology. Capitalism is great but when all these countries are building the same thing at the end of the day, why not work together to make them even better? Why all the break lights from patents and proprietary tech? I think it's unnecessary and basically creates a barricade in the way of progression. Also, if you would like to have an intelligent conversation, I'm fine with that but why do you feel the need to try and bully others or put people down? Do you feel like a bigger person because of it? You can do better and be a better example. Remember, you can be a part of the problem or a part of the solution. The choice is yours.
