Apple may be planning to name its new smartphones the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone Edition, according to a 9to5Mac report.

Behind the scenes at IFA in Berlin, Germany, the site was able to discuss the upcoming launch with case manufacturers. At least two have acted on information learned from sources in Shenzhen who have allegedly seen the new iPhone's packaging.

One casemaker has updated their internal SKUs based on the information and is actively printing packaging which I was able to see in the form of preliminary artwork. The other had made sticker labels which they were showing to their retail partners behind closed doors. Both makers requested anonymity for obvious reasons.

Macotakara predicted that Apple's OLED iPhone would be named the iPhone Edition back in March. In April, there was a report which said Apple would release two iPhone 8 models this year.

Notably, the case manufacturers that have acted on the iPhone 8 and iPhone Edition names are not small outfits, one is even carried in the Apple Store.

In addition to the names, sources say the iPhone Edition will have Qi wireless charging at a reduced rate compatible with current Qi chargers, a Lightning port, and improved Gorilla Glass 5.

Apple has announced a special event on September 12th at the Steve Jobs Theater at which the company will announce its new iPhones, a new 4K Apple TV, and a new LTE Apple Watch. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.
