Apple Working on Larger 6.46-inch iPhone Display for Release in 2018 [Report]

Apple has reportedly begun working on new 5.85-inch and 6.46-inch flexible OLED iPhone displays for release in 2018.

According to ETNews, Samsung has launched R&D for Apple's next generation display. Industry observers confirmed, "The display development project for the iPhone in 2018 has begun."

The 5.85-inch display is the same size as the one Apple plans to release this fall; however, it's likely to bring some performance improvements.

More notable, is the development of a 6.46-inch OLED display.

The new iPhone launched this fall is the first OLED-equipped model. LCD display to OLED display replacement, and 6.46 inch development is Apple's will to accelerate OLED conversion. If it is commercialized as planned, the OLED iPhone will grow from one model this year to at least two next year.

If Apple decides to keep the iPhone 8 around as a lower price device, the surge in OLED demand will 'shake up' the display industry. Apple sells over 200 million iPhones annually, even with adding just one OLED model, manufacturers have been struggling to meet demand.

According to the industry, Apple needs 70 million OLED units this year. The industry expects demand for next year to surge to 170 million units due to an increase in the number of models.

Up until recently, Apple was said to be looking at 5.28-inch and 6.46-inch OLED displays for next year; however, it's said the development of a 5.28-inch display has been suspended because consumer prefer larger screens.
