Apple to Embrace the iPhone 8 Notch [Report]

Apple has decided to embrace the notch at the top of the iPhone 8 instead of hiding it, according to a Bloomberg report.

The iPhone 8 is said to feature an OLED display that when showing black could blend nearly perfectly with the notch on the top bezel. However, rather than use this to hide the notch area, Apple is going to let the notch stand out.

Apple has opted to not hide the notch area at the top of the screen, showing a definitive cutout at the top of apps with non-black backgrounds. The cutout is noticeable during app usage in the middle of the very top of the screen, where the status bar (the area that shows cellular reception, the time, and battery life) would normally be placed, according to the images. Instead, the status bar will be split into left and right sides, which some Apple employees call “ears” internally. In images of recent test devices, the left side shows the time while the area on the right side of the notch displays cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity and remaining battery life.

Bloomberg also claims that instead of a Home button there will be a thin bar at the bottom of the display, that can be dragged up to the middle of the screen to open the phone. When using an app, a similar gesture will open the app switcher. You can then flick up to close the app and go back to the home screen. Apple has allegedly tested the complete removal of the home button - even a digital one - in favor of gestures.

The multitasking interface has reportedly been redesigned to appear like a series of standalone cards that can be swiped through, versus the current stack of cards.

Additionally, Bloomberg reports there will be a stainless steel band around the phone which was small antenna cuts on the corners to improve reception. The glass will curve into the stainless steel band.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 8 and a new iPhone 7s and 7s Plus at a press event on September 12th.

Maybe give us the power to customize how should the status bar behave around the top notch? I'm ALL in for the home button completely gone in favor of an activator-like gesture system! Haven't mostly touched the home buttons on my iPhones for years, it can go for good.
