The iPhone 8 will come with a facial recognition feature that can 'deeply sense' a user's face in 'millionths of a second', according to the Korea Herald.

The new facial recognition scanner with 3-D sensors can deeply sense a user’s face in the millionths of a second. Also, 3-D sensors are said to be adopted for the front and rear of the device to realize AR applications, which integrate 3-D virtual images with user’s environment in real time.

The existence of a facial recognition feature was confirmed in firmware for the upcoming HomePod. It's referenced as Pearl ID. The feature may even work when your iPhone is lying flat.

It's said that Apple and Samsung both tried create an in-display fingerprint reader for the new phones but both appear to have failed due to technical difficulties.

Additionally, the report says Apple has decided not to use a curved edge display; rather the iPhone will have a flat screen with minimal bezels and a notch on the top for the earpiece and front camera.

As to why Apple adopted plastic OLED even though it will not make the device curved or with an edge, the source said, OLED can make the device thinner and lighter compared to liquid crystal display panels that Apple has long adopted for its former iPhone models.

Apple is expected to unveil three new smartphones next month. Please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.
