iPhone 8 May Be Able to Scan Your Face While Lying Flat

New references found in the HomePod's firmware suggest that the iPhone 8 may be able to scan your face while lying flat.

Evidence of a new facial recognition feature (PearlID) for the iPhone 8 was discovered last month alongside confirmation of the device's design. There were also references to infrared, a feature which could facilitate facial recognition in the dark and at night.

iHelpBR has now found references to 'AXRestingPearlUnlock' and 'com.apple.acessibility.resting.pearl.unlock' that appear to corroborate reports of Face ID working while the iPhone is lying flat.

In early July, Bloomberg reported that Apple's system can allegedly scan your face within a few hundred milliseconds and can even work with the iPhone lying flat on a table. A source also claimed it takes in more data points than Touch ID, making it more secure.

Finally, iHelpBR has also spotted references to APPS_USING_PEARL and PEARL_AUTOLOCK_FOOTER suggesting that apps will be able to authenticate users with facial recognition and that perhaps your iPhone could auto lock if your face is no longer detected.
