Apple is 'committed' to helping LG product OLED iPhone displays so that it is not solely reliant on Samsung for the important component, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In a new research note the analyst says, OLED display has been the "single most troublesome component for Apple in terms of bargaining power."

We think Apple is therefore committed to having LGD geared up for its OLED iPhone display business in 2018 as it seeks to reduce supply risks. Even though LGD may likely start off with minimal initial penetration in 2018 (we estimate no more than 4-6%), the effort, with the full commitment of both Apple and LGD, will help LGD mature during the process and steadily gain supply share from 2019 onward. This will in turn continuously boost Apple’s bargaining power on OLED prices.

The Korea Economic Daily recently said that Apple has decided to invest $2.7 billion in LG Display's OLED production line. The funds would be given to LG as an advance payment for future panel supplies. Apple allegedly wants to secure the supply of 45,000 units of the 6.5th-generation OLED panel monthly from 2019.
