Apple's Wireless Charging Accessory for iPhone May Be Sold Separately, Ship Late

Apple's rumored inductive charging accessory for the next generation iPhones may be sold separately and ship later the new smartphones, reports Daring Fireball's John Gruber.

"I’ve heard that inductive charging will (a) be sold separately, and (b) might be late, waiting for iOS 11.1 (a la Portrait mode last year)," says Gruber. "I’m not sure if the holdup is hardware or software. And they could catch up in next three weeks."

A recent report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that Apple will release three new iPhones this year with glass bodies and metal frames to facilitate WPC-standard wireless charging (Qi). Kuo also claimed that Apple will make an optional wireless charging accessory available for purchase.

Back in February, Apple joined the Wireless Power Consortium but leaks have suggested that the company has 'at least five different groups working on wireless charging technology'.
