Apple has a secretive team working on turning the iPhone into a 'one-stop shop' for all your medical records, reports CNBC.
CNBC has learned that a secretive team within Apple's growing health unit has been in talks with developers, hospitals and other industry groups about bringing clinical data, such as detailed lab results and allergy lists, to the iPhone, according to a half-dozen people familiar with the team. And from there, users could choose to share it with third parties, like hospitals and health developers.
Apple is rumored to be looking at startups in the space which could be acquired. It's also been involved in discussions with health IT industry groups looking for ways to make this goal a reality. These groups include 'The Argonaut Project', an initiative to promote the adoption of open standards for health information and 'The Carin Alliance', an organization that looks to give patients a central role in controlling their medical information.
Bud Tribble, Apple VP of Software Technology and a trained physician with a background in medical research, has been involved with The Carin Alliance. Apple has also hired some developers involved with FHIR, a protocol for exchanging electronic health records.
