Bosch has won orders to supply Apple with some of the motion sensors for its next generation iPhone, reports Bloomberg. The win comes at the expense of InvenSense, currently Apple's main supplier of those components.
Bosch may supply as much as half of these components for the new iPhone, with InvenSense supplying the rest, the person said. Bosch already supplies barometric pressure sensors for the iPhone, according to product teardowns by iFixit and other firms that analyze the guts of gadgets.
Bosch and InvenSense both make gyroscopes and accelerometers which are used to detect the position and motion of your smartphone. Last August, InvenSense Chief Financial Officer Mark Dentinger hinted that Apple was planning to add another supplier.
“We’re still the largest player, but we are splitting some share now with our primary competitor,” Dentinger said. “Historically, it’s unlikely that most of our customers will have just one supplier over a long, long period of time.”
Sourcing components from multiple suppliers allows Apple to negotiate cheaper prices and ensure a stable supply.
