Apple is planning to ship a pro iMac later this year which could help tide the company over until its new redesigned Mac Pros ship.

“We have big plans for the iMac,” Apple SVPC Phil Schiller told BuzzFeed at a reporter roundtable at the company’s Machine Shop hardware prototyping lab. “We’re going to begin making configurations of iMac specifically with the pro customer in mind.”

Apple wouldn't reveal what those configurations would be or if the desktop would be called the iMac Pro; however, they did confirm it would not have touch.

“No,” Schiller said. “Touch doesn’t even register on the list of things pro users are interested in talking about. They're interested in things like performance and storage and expandability.”

Craig Federighi, Apple’s SVP of Software Engineering, notes that the desktop iMac has grown increasing powerful and can now accomplish some pro tasks.

“The iMac has seen an incredible evolution over the past decade,” Federighi said. “The original iMac you wouldn’t have thought of as remotely touching pro uses. But today’s 5K iMac in its top configurations? It’s incredibly powerful. Tasks that previously would have required the Mac Pros of old are now being well addressed by today’s iMac.”

It's unclear when we'll see these new iMacs but hopefully Apple will have some hardware to unveil at its WWDC conference in June.
