Apple has at least five different groups working on wireless charging technology, according to a new Reuters report.
While Samsung is supporting two wireless charging technologies (Qi and AirFuel), it's unclear which technology will make it into Apple's next generation iPhone. It's been rumored that Apple may be partnering with Energous for long-range wireless charging; however, Apple recently joined the Qi Wireless Power Consortium which hints that it may go with inductive charging.
Interestingly, Apple may still be debating which way to go itself. Reuters source says, "there are still at least five different groups working on wireless charging technology within Apple." This follows another report from last week which claims Apple has been working with Broadcom on a custom wireless charging system for the last two years.
Another feature rumored for the iPhone 8 is a 3D sensor which could provide facial recognition amongst other new functionality. TechInsights notes that there already is a time-of-flight sensor in the iPhone which is used for autofocus. That sensor could be updated to a higher-resolution version which could handle 3D mapping.
Apple's isn't expected to unveil the iPhone 8 until this fall but it already looks to be a major upgrade. You can follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for updates.
