Apple iPhone 8 to Feature 'Revolutionary' Front Camera With 3D Sensing Capabilities?

The rumored iPhone 8 with edge-to-edge OLED display will feature a 'revolutionary' front camera with 3D sensing capabilities, according to a new report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The system will feature three modules that run algorithms created by PrimeSense, an Israeli company Apple acquired in 2013.

The three modules include an infrared transmitting module, an infrared receiving module, and the front camera module itself. Working together the system will be able to find the location and depth of objects in front of it, potentially enabling new functionality such as facial and iris recognition. It could also be used for some gaming applications and future AR or VR experiences.

Kuo says the camera system "will bring an innovative user experience". For only the front camera is expected to gain this functionality but "future iPhones may come with a similar system for the rear camera".


The report corroborates recent rumors that have suggested Apple may move away from fingerprint recognition for the iPhone 8.

It's widely expected that the 10th anniversary iPhone will be a major update. It will purportedly have a chassis made of reinforced glass with a stainless steel metal frame and an edge-to-edge display that has no bezels on the top and bottom. Additionally, the front camera, Touch ID, speaker, and other sensors will apparently be embedded into the display. Another report claims that the device would be a clear piece of glass with a next-generation OLED screen. The 5.8-inch screen is said to feature a main 5.15-inch display area with a reserved 'function area' below for virtual buttons. The device may use a stacked logic board design freeing up space for a larger battery pack. More recently, Apple is said to be equipping the phone with wireless charging, an iris scanner or face scanner, and a 3D camera.
