WhatsApp has announced Status, a clone of Snapchat Stories that lets you post photos, videos, and GIFs that will disappear after 24 hours.
We are excited to announce that, coinciding with WhatsApp's 8th birthday on February 24, we are reinventing the status feature. Starting today, we are rolling out an update to status, which allows you to share photos and videos with your friends and contacts on WhatsApp in an easy and secure way. Yes, even your status updates are end-to-end encrypted.
Users can watch updates from friends, stylize their images with drawings and captions, and control who can see their updates with privacy settings.
Launch of the new feature comes just ahead of Snap's IPO. Instagram's clone of Snapchat Stories was a huge success and significantly affected Snapchat's growth. We'll soon see if WhatsApp Status has a similar effect.
You can download WhatsApp Messenger from the App Store for free.
