Samsung Display has landed a huge $4.35 billion order for OLED displays from Apple, reports The Korea Herald.
Totaling 13 trillion won so far, Samsung Display has proved a major supplier for Apple’s upcoming iPhone models, sources said Monday.
Sources said the recent OLED order was for 60 million panels. This is on top of another order Samsung landed last April for 100 million OLED panels worth 8 trillion won. This means that Samsung will be supplying about 80% of the displays for the new iPhone based on an estimate that Apple will sell around 200 million units.
Samsung has three OLED panel production lines in Cheonan and Asan in South Chungcheong Province of South Korea. Some sources say the company is considering building another plant in the vicinity of the current plants in order to meet soaring demand.
The company declined to comment when questioned about the order from Apple. “We can’t officially comment on anything related to the order,” said a spokesman at Samsung Display.
It's widely believed that the 10th anniversary iPhone will be a major update. It will purportedly have a front glass cover and chassis, joined by a metal bezel and an edge-to-edge display that has no bezels on the top and bottom. Additionally, the front camera, Touch ID, speaker, and other sensors will apparently be embedded into the display. Another report claims that the device would be a clear piece of glass with a next-generation OLED screen. More recently, Apple is said to be equipping the phone with wireless charging, an iris scanner, and a 3D camera.
