Apple is switching to a glass casing for the iPhone 8 in order to support wireless charging, according to a report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
The entire line-up of 2017 iPhones will purportedly get an all-glass case and Pegatron will supply the wireless charger, says Kuo. The all-glass case will reportedly avoid issues with wireless frequency tolerances for metal alloys that can limit charging speeds. Additionally, Jonathan Ive has apparently wanted to introduce an iPhone that looks like a sheet a glass for several years.
We believe one of the reasons why new iPhones will switch from metal casing to glass casing is to support wireless charging. In order to ensure a superior performance, we believe it is most appropriate for EMS suppliers to develop and make the wireless charger because then a comprehensive test can be conducted. As Hon Hai needs to deploy most resources to develop and produce OLED iPhone, we expect Pegatron will be the exclusive supplier of the wireless charger.
It's unclear if the wireless charger will be bundled with the new iPhones or whether it will be a separate purchase.
Previous reports have suggested that Apple will release three iPhones next year. As usual there will be a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch model but also a new 5.7-5.8 inch flexible OLED will an active area of just 5.1-5.2 inches.
