Apple May Be Working on a Pair of Digital Glasses

Apple is considering an expansion into digital glasses, according to a new Bloomberg report.

While still in an exploration phase, the device would connect wirelessly to iPhones, show images and other information in the wearer’s field of vision, and may use augmented reality, the people said. They asked not to be identified speaking about a secret project.

Apple has reportedly discussed the project with potential suppliers and has ordered a small quantity of 'near-eye displays' for testing. So far the company hasn't ordered enough components to suggest it will enter production.

It's likely that if Apple decides to pursue the project it would be introduced in 2018 at the earliest. Apple CEO Tim Cook says the company is investing a lot in AR and is 'high on AR for the long run'.

Augmented reality "is going to take a while, because there are some really hard technology challenges there, but it will happen in a big way, and we will wonder when it does, how we ever lived without it," Cook said last month. "Like we wonder how we lived without our phone today."

Notably, a recent report from Robert Scoble predicts that the next iPhone will be a clear piece of glass that can be inserted into a headset which has eye sensors on it. The iPhone would be able to put holograms on top of the real world. Another report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple is working on augmented reality technology for use in key products and autonomous driving.
