Apple is planning to launch a new MacBook with customizable e-ink display keys in 2018, reports the WSJ.

The new keyboards will be a standard feature on MacBook laptops, and will be able to display any alphabet, along with an unlimited number of special commands and emojis, people familiar with the plans said. Apple is aiming for a 2018 launch, these people said.

As reported a week ago, the technology for the keyboard has been developered by Sonder Design, an Australian startup backed by Foxconn.

Apple CEO Tim Cook is said to have discussed plans for the MacBook with the heads of Foxconn and Sonder on October 11th in China.

The keyboard would be very appealing to those who type in different language or people who often use one application or game with unique commands. Apple is believed to be making a partial step towards this customizable keyboard with the launch of an updated MacBook on October 27th. The keyboard is said to feature an OLED Touch Bar that replaces the function keys.
