Apple Puts Bob Mansfield In Charge of Its Electric Car Project [WSJ]

Apple has put Bob Mansfield, former SVP of Technologies, in charge of its much rumored electric car project, reports the WSJ.

Bob Mansfield had stepped back from a day-to-day role at the company a few years ago, after leading the hardware engineering development of products including the MacBook Air laptop computer, the iMac desktop computer, and the iPad tablet. Apple now has Mr. Mansfield running the company’s secret autonomous, electric-vehicle initiative, code-named Project Titan, the people said.

Mansfield originally retired as SVP of Hardware Engineering back in June of 2012, but then came back to the company when Forstall left.

In 2013, Apple revealed that Mansfield was no longer Senior Vice President of Technologies and would be working on 'special projects' reporting directly to CEO Tim Cook.

Until recently sources claim that Mansfield was absent from the company except for an occasional visit; however, earlier this year employees began noticing that in the company directly all senior managers on the car project were reporting to the long time Apple exec.

The target date for Apple's much rumored electric car has reportedly slipped to 2021.
