Orders from Apple will help Samsung Display increase shipments of its OLED display panels to 560 million units in 2019, hiking 114% from 2015, reports DigiTimes.
Samsung Electronics will likely remain Samsung Display's largest client for smartphone-use AMOLED panels with demand growing from 239 million units in 2016 to 290 million units in 2019. However, Samsung Display will benefit greatly from Apple's expected shift to OLED displays for the iPhone.
Apple is expected to initially adopt AMOLED panels for iPhones to be launched in 2017, with Samsung Display's supply estimated at 40 million units in 2017, 80 million units in 2018 and 120 million units in 2019.
It's been widely rumored that Apple is planning a major update to the iPhone in 2017 with an edge-to-edge display that has no bezels on the top and bottom. Additionally, the front camera, Touch ID, speaker, and other sensors will apparently be embedded into the display.
LG, Sharp, and Japan Display are also vying to become OLED display panel suppliers for the new device.
