Intel Lands Order From Apple for LTE Modems in New iPhone

Intel has landed orders for the LTE modem in the new iPhone, reports Bloomberg. Its chip will replace the one from Qualcomm in some versions of the upcoming smartphone.

Apple has chosen Intel modem chips for the iPhone used on AT&T Inc.’s U.S. network and some other versions of the smartphone for overseas markets, said people familiar with the matter. IPhones on Verizon Communications Inc.’s network will stick with parts from Qualcomm, which is the only provider of the main communications component of current versions of Apple’s flagship product.

Notably, Qualcomm will still be supplying modems for the iPhone that is sold in China.


The major win for Intel was signaled by Qualcomm CEO Steven M. Mollenkopf in an April earnings call when he said the company was assuming that a large customer may begin 'second-sourcing'.

Representatives from all companies refused to comment on the report.
