Apple is Investigating Charging Stations for Electric Vehicles

Apple is researching how to charge electric cars, talking to charging station companies and hiring engineers with expertise in the area, reports Reuters.

With rumors rampant that Apple is working on building an electric (perhaps self-driving) car, the company appears to be working on the infrastructure that would be crucial to supporting such an endeavor.

Apple is now asking charging station companies about their underlying technology, one person with knowledge of the matter said. The talks, which have not been reported, do not concern charging for electric cars of Apple employees, a service the company already provides. They indicate that Apple is focused on a car, the person added.

As expected, charging firms are wary of sharing too much information with Apple, a company that could become a potential rival. It's unclear if Apple wants to develop its own charging technology or design a system that would work with others.

Reuters also notes that Apple has hired at least four specialists in the area of electric vehicle charging, including former BMW employee Rónán Ó Braonáin, wireless charging engineer Nan Liu, and former Google charging expert Kurt Adelberger.
