Apple has asked suppliers to produce a higher than expected number of iPhone 7 units, according to a new report.

Taiwan's Economic Daily says that Apple is requesting suppliers make 72 to 78 million iPhones by the end of the year. That's much higher than the 65 million units expected by the street and the highest production target in about two years.

Hon Hai Precision Technology is said to remain the key assembler with Pegatron also getting orders. Both companies should get a higher share of Apple's orders this year by participating in dual camera and glass casing component production in addition to assembling the device.

Apple supplier stock went up on the news. Pegatron soared 10% today, Catcher Technology (2474.Taiwan) jumped 9.9%, Hon Hai Precision gained 4.7%, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (2330.Taiwan/TSM) rose 3.8%, and Largan Precision (3008.Taiwan) was up 2.6%.
