Apple has hired George Stathakopoulos, former vice president of information security at Amazon.com, to be VP of Corporate Information Security, reports Fortune.

Stathakopoulos reports to Apple’s chief financial officer and will be responsible for protecting corporate assets, such as the computers used to design products and develop software, as well as data about customers. The company’s heads of hardware and software remain in charge of protecting users of Apple’s products.

Sources say that Stathakopoulos started a week ago at Apple. Before working at Amazon he worked for over eight years as a general manager at Microsoft. His appointment comes as Apple is in the middle of a public fight with the FBI over the encryption and security of its devices.

Apple will meet the FBI in court on March 22nd, one day after its press event to announce a new 4-inch iPhone and 9.7-inch iPad Pro.
