Apple is reportedly working to develop a method of wirelessly charging the iPhone that could be released as early as next year, reports Bloomberg.

Apple is exploring cutting-edge technologies that would allow iPhones and iPads to be powered from further away than the charging mats used with current smartphones, the people said, asking not to be identified as the details are private. The iPhone maker is looking to overcome technical barriers including loss of power over distance with a decision on implementing the technology still being assessed, they said.

The company has been investigating various methods of wireless charging for years. Back in 2014, it was reported that Apple engineers were trying to add solar charging to iPhones and iPods. Apple has also patented a charging method that uses an iMac as the source of resonance power creating a charging field of about one meter in-front of the computer. It has also examined WiTricity, a method for transferring larger amounts of power wirelessly over more practical distances (up to a couple of meters) than traditional induction.

Apple declined to comment on the report but a wireless charging feature like the one described would definitely make for a compelling iPhone 7s upgrade.
