Apple has opened a production laboratory in northern Taiwan where the company is developing new display technologies, according to a new report from Bloomberg. The report claims that Apple has at least 50 engineers and other workers creating displays for devices including the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Apple began operating this lab this year in an effort to make their displays thinner, lighter, brighter, and more energy-efficient. The report claims that Apple is also interested in possibly moving to OLED technology, which corroborates a similar report that surfaced last month.
Apple has also recruited several employees from AU Optronics and Qualcomm to work in the facility, which was previously owned by Qualcomm. Records indicate Apple moved into the factory in April.
By working directly on the development of new display technologies, Apple can reduce its reliance on third-party suppliers including Samsung, LG, and Sharp. While Apple does a majority of their research at their headquarters in Cupertino, it still outsources manufacturing to companies like Foxconn.
