Apple is quietly working on a major expansion of its Elk Grove campus in Sacramento County, California, reports bizjournals. City officials say the expansion could mean several thousand new jobs.
The company is converting a 134,000-square-foot warehouse into a logistics operation. That move, along with addition of 1,450 parking spaces beginning last summer, points to many more employees, said Darrell Doan, the city’s economic development director.
Apple is spending at least $13 million on improving the facility, adding medical and dental facilities, a massage room, exercise room and yoga studio. These are amenities that tech companies often use to attract talent and keep employees happy. Apple is also said to be working with the city's transportation department to evaluate a bus service for employees and other workers.
“As indicated from the work, Apple is undertaking a major expansion in Elk Grove,” Doan said.
In 2014, the facility had about 2,500 employees. It handles warehousing, distribution, and customer support calls. It's said that Apple could handle iPhone repair and logistics from Elk Grove or even use the area as a co-location center for iTunes.
