Apple has placed LCD driver IC orders for the iPhone 7 with Synaptics, indicating that its own in-house touch and display driver integration (TDDI) solution will not be ready, reports DigiTimes.
The development of Apple's in-house developed TDDI solutions has fallen behind schedule, as the smartphone vendor has released orders for its 2016 models to Synaptics, said the sources. After acquiring Renesas SP Drivers (RSP), the sole supplier of LCD driver ICs for iPhones, Synaptics has reportedly been striving to maintain orders from Apple amid speculation that the smartphone vendor could reduce its reliance on the supplier.
Apple is said to have hired engineers away from Renesas to help develop its TDDI solution but it's unclear how far along in the development process the company is.
Recent rumors have suggested that the iPhone 7 could make its debut a little earlier than usual. More details on that here.
