Apple CFO Kills Apple TV Cable Box Rumor

Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer effectively killed the rumor that the Apple TV might become a cable box, according to an AppleInsider report.

In a research note to investors, Caris & Company said that its analysts met with Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer recently.

The Apple TV has been long rumored to receive some type of cable box functionality such as live TV recording and integration with cable providers. However, analyst Robert Cihra says that Oppenheimer effectively killed that rumor indicating that the move makes no sense for the company.


"While some have wondered whether Apple might ultimately try to integrate traditional cable set-top box (decoding) functionality into its Apple TV product, Mr. Oppenheimer pretty much killed that concept and said that it just doesn't fit Apple's business," the report said.

Recent speculation suggests that the Apple TV might receive a storage bump in the near future; however, its unlikely that a major upgrade will come until Apple negotiates more with media suppliers.
