The European Commission has been unable to find evidence that Apple colluded with music labels to end free music streaming services, reports Re/code.
Investigators examined whether the labels conspired with one another or with Apple on Apple’s new streaming music service in a way that would hurt rivals. The probe failed to turn up any illegal activity, though the EU will continue to monitor the market, sources said.
EU regulators sent questionnaires to major labels before the launch of Apple Music, asking for details about their licensing discussions with Apple. They were concerned that Apple and music industry executives were attempting to stifle free services from Spotify and others.
Notably, the EU has also asked Spotify and other music streaming services for information about the App Store and the restrictions Apple is placing on apps in the store. Similarly, the FTC is also looking into Apple's treatment of rival apps. The company takes a 30% cut of in-app subscription signups and prohibits apps from directing customers to their website to signup or purchase.
