Apple is preparing for a huge initial production run of its next generation iPhones, reports the WSJ. It appears as the company is expected even higher demand for the new iPhone than was expected for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus released last year.
Apple is asking suppliers to manufacture between 85 million and 90 million units combined of two new iPhone models with 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays by Dec. 31, according to people familiar with the matter. The screen sizes are the same as in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
In comparison, Apple order a previous record initial production run of 70-80 million units for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
The WSJ notes that Apple has seen blockbusters sales of its latest smartphones. In the first half its fiscal year ending September, Apple sold 135.6 million iPhones.
It's rumored that the iPhone 6s will be slightly thicker to accommodate a new Force Touch feature for the display but otherwise look very similar to the current device. Other predictions for the iPhone 6s include a new NFC chip, 16GB of storage, a faster LTE chip, a Rose Gold color option, 7000 series aluminum, 12MP Camera, 4K Video Recording, 240fps Slow-Mo, and more.
