Apple has filed an patent that details methods of exchanging information between devices in proximity based on various gestures. The patent is entitled, "GESTURE-BASED INFORMATION EXCHANGE BETWEEN DEVICES IN PROXIMITY".

Notably, it would let users transfer information when they meet. For example, when a handshake gesture is detected, perhaps by your Apple Watch, it would initiate the exchange.

Certain embodiments of the present invention can facilitate the exchange of information (including but not limited to contact information) between user devices (e.g., mobile devices) worn or carried by two different users. The exchange of information can be wholly or partially automated and can occur in response to a device detecting a“greeting event.” In some embodiments, a greeting event is detected when two user devices belonging to different users are in proximity and the users of the devices concurrently execute a greeting gesture, such as a handshake, bow, hand slap, hug, or the like.

Apple notes that in response to a single greeting event, each participating user device can act as both sender and receiver, selecting and sending information items to the other user device and receiving any information items that the other user device selects to send. Users could also control and customize what information their devices send in a context-specific manner; this can allow users to manage and control the sharing of personal data and/or other information items according to their preferences while still allowing the exchange to occur automatically (without being expressly initiated by the user).
